Soar into summer at Willows Academy’s camps for girls

Willows Academy summer camps deliver meaningful, fun and engaging actvities that are designed to enhance knowledge of STEM subjects and visual and performing arts. Through our camps, girls will discover and grow their individual skills and abilities, develop life-long friendships and have an opportunity to serve the greater community. 

CAMP OVERVIEWS

Girls will engage in interactive team building activities where they will put their STEM knowledge to use. In addition, camp days will be filled with creative arts and crafts and fun, friendly competition on the sports field. The week will conclude with an end-of-camp show. Your daughter will enhance her art design skills and techniques in a fun, friendly setting. She will engage in creative activities where she’ll put her STEM knowledge to use. Camp will include friendly competitive sports. The week will conclude with an end-of-camp show.

 

Camp Instructor Bios

Lucia Pardilla, Camp Soar Director

Lucia Pardilla is a Willows parent (Isa ’19 and Nani ’23) and a long-time camp organizer. Lucia has a B.A. in Education from the University of Dallas and an M.A. in Education with a focus on Educational Administration from Roosevelt University. As Camp Director she is facilitating the camps, working with instructors on content, and will ensure the camps go smoothly. Feel free to email Lucia with any questions at summer@willowsacademy.org.

Michele Morris, Camp Soar Art Instructor

Michele is the fine arts department head, as well as the moderator for digital photography club and art club. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago – with a focus on computer animation/architecture and received a Master of Art Education from Columbia College.

Diana Heyden, Camp Soar Drama Instructor

Diana Heyden ‘19, participated in six Willows Academy musicals and one Northridge Prep production. She thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Willows drama community from 7th to 12th grade and both misses and appreciates its wonderful community. Diana is currently a sophomore at Notre Dame, studying economics and pre-health and enjoys keeping up with her parish choir.

Rhiannon Cassata, Camp Soar STEM Instructor

Rhiannon Cassata ‘19, is studying fashion design at Dominican University. She loves being creative and working with others. In addition to being a camp instructor, she also coaches middle school volleyball and high school softball at Willows.

Isa Pardilla, Camp Soar Art Instructor

Isa Pardilla ’19 is studying Theater Design, Production and Technology at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  After her work in productions both at Willows and UIC, she is excited to share her love of art with girls at Camp Soar.  She is happy to be working once again alongside her mom for the sixth year running!

CAMP SOAR JUNIOR

Camp SOAR Jr. (Grades 1-5)

Girls entering 1st – 5th grades will engage in interactive team building activities where they will put their STEM knowledge to use. In addition, camp days will be filled with creative arts and crafts, and fun, friendly competition on the sports field. Girls may choose from a drama or voice elective, and then participate in an end-of-camp show.

Camp SOAR Jr. STEM Activities

Summer fun with STEM is at the core of Camp SOAR. Students will work in teams to actively engineer working models with engineering processes at the focus of their projects. Campers will…

  • Be introduced to engineering processes
  • Learn and build on STEM knowledge, specifically enhancing math and science literacy
  • Practicee critical thinking skills while finding creative solutions to face problems
  • Enhance their team building skills through collaborative efforts
  • Innovate recycled materials to complete STEM projects, thus helping to conserve natural resources and elminate waste

Camp SOAR Jr. Arts and Crafts Activities

  • Grow in craafting skills while enahcing their sense of aesthetics 
  • Learn to act and think as designers and artists through the processes of craft making
  • Improve motor skills and dexterity
  • Practice decision making skills and self-expression

*In the long-standing tradition of service at Willows Academy, all campers will have an opportunity to create additional projects to be gifted to residents in local nursing homes, thus giving campers an opportunity to live generosity and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Camp SOAR Jr. Electives

When registering, campers may choose between drama or voice class. All campers will participate in our Camp Soar Extravaganza, an end-of-camp show, which will take place each Friday of camp. Drama campers will be directed to participate in fun skits and recitations. Members of the voice class will be led in popular show tunes and be introduced to choral singing.

Voice Elective

  • Learn the importance of body alignment and body posture
  • Learn the basics of breath and breathing habits
  • Learn and practice baic voice warmups and exercises
  • Be introduced to qualities of the voice, namely tone and range
  • Grow in skills, so as to grow in confidence in performing before an audience

Drama Elective

  • Be introduced to relaxation techniques
  • Learn the importance of diction and tone when speaking
  • Learn to communicate through gestures and posture
  • Learn to communicate emotions more effectively
  • Learn basic stage direction
  • Grow in skills, so as to grow in confidence in performing before an audience
